The aim of the study programme is providing a complete university education of the 3rd (PhD) degree. The graduate has to master scientific methods of the basic botanical and ecological research with a special regard to the application in taxonomy of lower and higher plants, genetics and physiology of forest tree species, phytocenology and forestry typology, plant ecology, but also preserving biodiversity and protection of genetic resources and forest tree breeding.
The graduates obtain knowledge and practical skills in the sphere of vegetation classification within various classification systems (forestry typology, geobotanical system, biotopes), assessment of the condition and changes to the species composition and the structure of forest ecosystem vegetation in the context of various ecological factors determining the character of forest communities, also in the sphere of monitoring and observing the species composition of forest ecosystems. Specialization in the sphere of physiology and genetic sources enables the consequent application in forestry primary production (mainly breeding and nursery centres of Semenoles and private owners). The knowledge and skills are focused on methodologies of physiological and eco-physiological research and its connection with evaluation of forest health condition, using genetic markers and their connections with problems of forest reproduction material and forest tree species breeding. At the same time, the PhD study broadens horizons of knowledge applicable in civil service of forest management.
The graduates of the study branch of forestry phytology are qualified to hold positions of specialists and executives in the given spheres and they can also work as university and secondary school teachers or research workers in the industry´s research institutions or in the Slovak Academy of Sciences.
